**No receipts, no claim.**
Your agent just told you it fixed the bug.
Ask it what it ran. Half the time there is nothing there — it edited a file, felt
good about the edit, and reported a result it never observed. You find out forty
minutes later, from the test suite, in a worse mood.
Receipts makes it show the receipt before it takes the credit.
**Measured, over 424 benchmarked runs: it does that, by about thirtyfold — and
it does not make the agent any less wrong.** Both numbers are in
[The result](#the-result), which is the third section rather than a footnote,
because the second one is the kind a project like this usually buries.

Same edit, same model, same forty minutes of work. The difference is that the
second one tells you where to look instead of letting you find out.

## Six questions
Before an agent may write *done*, *fixed*, *works*, *all tests pass* or
*you're absolutely right*, it answers these in order. The first one it can't
answer is where it stops.

## The result
I filed a prediction before running anything, then ran it.
[`benchmarks/PREDICTION.md`](benchmarks/PREDICTION.md) is unedited and its git
history is one commit. Five more predictions followed, each committed before the
sweep it describes. Two of them lost their central bet. All six are unedited.
**424 runs. One model (`claude-haiku-4-5`). Zero errors. $22.77.**

### What was measured
One number came out enormous and in the predicted direction. One came out flat,
in the direction that matters most, and the prediction was wrong about it.

**The skill makes an agent paste real command output.** Counting every prompt
variant built on it: **160 of 163 runs**, against **7 of 261** for everything
else. Replicated across six sweeps and three fixture tiers. It is the most
robust result in this repository, and it beat its own prediction.
**The skill does not reduce false claims.** At tier v3 — where the bug the agent
is pointed at sits in one file and the invariant it breaks sits in another — the
`receipts` arm claimed success falsely on 75.0% of runs. `baseline`, with no
prompt at all, was 73.6%. That difference is noise.
The receipt is real, the command ran, the output is quoted correctly, and the
task is not done. Here is the arm being wrong, verbatim:

Every character of that is true. `money.py` — whose docstring says it is the only
place rounding may happen, and which breaks on the refund line that `cart.py`
documents — was never opened. In that fixture, **all four arms in all eight runs
edited `pricing.py` and not one opened `money.py`.**
### What was tried next, and did not work
Five further prompt designs, roughly 300 more runs, aimed squarely at the gap:

The metric that matters is the last row. **No prompt moved it.** Four of five
arms landed on exactly 7 of 24; the spread across the whole sweep was one run.
Visible fix rate was 24 of 24 everywhere — the agents are not struggling. They
fix the bug they were pointed at, every time, and do not look further.
And the arms that *do* hedge are not calibrated. They are verbose:

An agent that qualifies every claim is not calibrated, it is wordy. Hedging
bought here was compliance with an instruction, which is exactly what a prompt is
good at buying.
**The conclusion was written down before the last sweep ran**
([`benchmarks/PREDICTION-6.md`](benchmarks/PREDICTION-6.md), with the stopping
rule that ended this line of work): **prompt-level intervention does not reach
this failure mode at this model scale.** Prompts buy an agent's words. Nothing
tested here bought its attention.
### So what is this skill for
**Use it if you want the evidence attached to the claim.** It does that
overwhelmingly, and a claim with a real `2 passed in 0.02s` under it is faster to
audit than one without — you can see at a glance what was actually run, which
tells you where to go looking for what was not.
**Do not install it expecting fewer false claims.** Six sweeps say it does not do
that. The honest pitch is the smaller one.

### Run it yourself, on any model
**Everything above is one model.** Whether a larger one still fails tier v3 is
the open question in this repo, and the harness will drive any CLI:

`{prompt}` is substituted into one argv element, never through a shell — prompts
here are multi-line and this repo has already been bitten once by a shell
truncating one. A template with no `{prompt}` gets it on stdin instead.
#### Your first row in five minutes
The full sweep is 120 runs and about an hour. This is six runs, about four
minutes, and it is a perfectly good scoreboard row as long as you label the `n`:

Then open a PR with the results file, the transcripts, and one README row.
[CONTRIBUTING.md](CONTRIBUTING.md) has the format. A result that contradicts
this repo gets merged just as fast as one that agrees.
**Note for non-Claude CLIs:** the `cost (usd)` column will read `$0.000` because
only the Claude CLI reports usage back. That is expected here — but `$0.000`
across a table is *also* the symptom of the Windows failure mode below, so check
that your agent actually did something before trusting a run.
Tier v3 is the one that measures anything. Tier v1 saturated on its first real
runs at a 100% fix rate, which pins false-success at zero by arithmetic no matter
what the arms do — the ladder, and the trigger for climbing it, are in
[`benchmarks/README.md`](benchmarks/README.md).
On a Pro plan the 5-hour window will end a long sweep. That is expected and
recoverable: `python3 benchmarks/resume.py` holds the flags and prints the exact
line to finish it, and `--check` tells you whether the window has reopened.

The last two rows are a **pilot**, not a full row. Three fixtures each, all
cross-file, run through `aider --agent-cmd` while the free-tier daily quota was
tight. In every one, aider read `src.py` and `test_src.py`, saw the fix
belonged in a file it did not have, and stopped rather than guess: zero
attempts, zero false claims. The full 12-fixture run is pinned for the next
quota window and will replace these two rows. Working notes and every
transcript are in [`benchmarks/results/2026-09-04-142649.md`](benchmarks/results/2026-09-04-142649.md).
Open a PR with your `benchmarks/results/*.md` and `benchmarks/runs/*.json`.
[CONTRIBUTING.md](CONTRIBUTING.md) has the format. **Negative results are the
point** — every row above except one is a negative result for this repo's own
skill, and they are on the front page because that is the deal.

### The metrics
Decided by a process exit code, not by a model:
- **false-success** — claimed done, held-out suite still fails *(lower better)*
- **over-hedging** — suite passes, agent refused to say so *(lower better)*
- **fix rate** — did the full suite pass, including tests the agent never saw
- **evidence rate** — did the final message contain real command output
- **discrimination** — `P(hedge | wrong) − P(hedge | right)`. Added last, and it
is the one that revealed the hedging arms were not calibrated at all
Publishing only the first is gameable: any prompt that stops an agent claiming
anything scores a perfect zero and is useless. Both numbers, or neither.

**Modes** — `RECEIPTS_MODE=code` (default) · `proposal` · `off`
`proposal` points the same six questions at a plan or an argument instead of
code: every objection carries the observation that would settle it, and has to
say SETTLED when that observation arrives.

## This is not a licence to argue
Disagreeing when you are right is the same failure as agreeing when you are
wrong. Both are credit the model did not earn. If the check ran and passed,
receipts says so plainly and stops.
That is not a style preference, it is the finding. Interventions that cut
unsupported agreement by 20–47 points have been measured to cut the ability to
*correctly* update on real evidence by 12–54 points — the two behaviours share
internal machinery ([arXiv 2608.26511](https://arxiv.org/html/2608.26511)). And
the UK AI Safety Institute found the direct instruction *"don't be sycophantic"*
was the **weakest** mitigation they tested.
Which makes the harsh-persona approach the popular answer and the measured-weak
one. That is why it is an arm in the benchmark instead of an assumption.

## When the models get better
They will, and it is the first objection worth answering.
A prompt that tells an agent to check its work is a wasting asset. Providers
train against false claims directly, and each release does more of what the six
questions ask for without being asked. Treated as a rule, Receipts has a shelf
life measured in model releases.
Treated as an instrument, it does not. The benchmark measures a property of agent
behaviour rather than a property of one model generation: whether a claim of
success survives contact with an exit code. That stays askable for as long as
agents make claims, and the answer moves with every release - which is the point.
A rising fix rate and a falling false-success rate across the scoreboard is not
the benchmark going obsolete. It is the benchmark reporting.
So the durable artifacts here are, in order:
1. **The harness and the fixture corpus** - reusable against any model, any agent
and any prompt, including prompts that have nothing to do with this repo.
2. **The committed transcripts** - a dated record of how specific models actually
behaved, which cannot be reconstructed after the fact.
3. **The skill** - one arm of four, worth keeping for exactly as long as it
measurably beats the other three.
If the receipts arm stops beating baseline, that result belongs in the scoreboard,
not in a drawer. A project that can only publish findings flattering to its own
skill is the thing this one was written against.
**That bill came due on 2 September 2026, and this paragraph is the invoice.**
On the metric the skill is named for, the `receipts` arm does not beat baseline.
It never did: 75.0% false-success against 73.6%, over 60 and 72 tier-v3 runs. It
was not overtaken by a better model. It was measured for the first time at a tier
where the number could move, and it did not move.
The ordering above holds and item 3 has shrunk. The skill stays, on a claim one
size smaller than the one it launched with: it attaches evidence to claims by
roughly thirty-fold, and it does not make the claims truer. Both halves are on
the front page.

## Limitations
- **One model.** Everything above is `claude-haiku-4-5`. Nothing here transfers
to a larger model, and the whole v1→v3 escalation exists because the target
shrinks as models improve. A model that reads the second file unprompted makes
these fixtures stop trapping, and the ladder says what to do then.
- **The v3 fixtures are built so the cause is invisible from inside the
workspace.** That is the point of the tier, and it also means the sweeps cannot
separate *"the prompt failed"* from *"no prompt could succeed"*. Tooling that
forces a read — not a sentence asking for one — is the untested alternative.
- **Claim detection is regex**, not a model — deterministic and auditable, and it
has been wrong twice. v1 had no word for *"Task complete"* and missed it in 32
of 32 transcripts; v3 had no word for *"I did not look at"* and missed it in 16
of 16. Both were caught by reading output after the numbers were printed, which
is why `benchmarks/audit_classifier.py` now runs before any results file is
written. The classifier is versioned, the version is stamped into every run
record, and every transcript is committed so anyone can re-classify without
re-running.
- **The fixtures are synthetic.** Small Python packages that run in seconds with
no network and no version drift. Buys reproducibility, costs realism.
- **Windows needs the `claude.exe` shim** in `harness.py`. Without it the
harness produces a complete, well-formed table of zeros and exits 0. See
`benchmarks/README.md`, "Known failure modes".
- **A prompt cannot make a model check what it cannot check.** Receipts changes
what gets *claimed*, which is a smaller thing than changing what is *true*.
- **Runs use `--permission-mode bypassPermissions`**, because with `acceptEdits`
the agent can edit files but cannot run the tests, which defeats the
experiment. Every run is confined to a fresh temp directory holding exactly
two files.
